Our Humble Beginnings
We began as a small Minecraft server hosted on the home computer of Oli (also known as Trumple or Jetman). Minecraft had just been released. Not being one for white lists, Oli made it open to the public, and unable to think of anything to call it, simply called it, "The Cube"
Beginning

April 2011

A game server is born.
On April 21st, 2011, Oli and Tank met in-game for the first time, unknowingly sparking a chain of events that would wind up leading The Cube to where we are now. In May, lacking the funds to continue, Oli was about to close the server. However, Tank offered to pay for the servers so his kids ccould continue playing there. Following this, Oli asked Tank to be co-admin (of which Tank was not interested). Hoever, after thinking on it, Tank came back to Oli with a proposal to start a business out of The Cube, hosting multiple servers of multiple games. Oli, being 17 and living on the other side of the world, was happy to do so, but was reluctant to get involved in the startup of a business. It was decided that Oli would handle the technical side of things and Tank would run the buisiness end, handling the community and the finances.

October 2011

A solid foundation
Through the summer, The Cube was moved to professional grade hardware, and the community began to grow rapidly. During this time, while managing the online community, Tank spent his time preparing paperwork for The Cube. He wrote a business plan, conducted market research, and on October 17, 2011, The Cube Server became an official bbusiness entitiy when Tank filed with the City of San Antonio to become a sole proprietorship. However, even though it was officially a sole proprietorship, The Cube Server was always treated like a nation with two kings, And Oli and Tank poured their heart and soul into making a thriving, online community.

Another step forward
In July, Oli had come to Tank and said, "Hey, what do you think about Gmod?" Tank said, "No... okay, maybe." Then, in August, The cube took its first steps into the Gmod scene with a basic, sandbox server. We had fun building things and attempting to crash the server. It was a blast. At this time, Oli became inspired to create his own Jailbreak game mode, well-known as "Jailbreak by Jetman".

December 2012

Topsy-turvy
Things got a little hectic in December. BBy this time, Minecraft had been operating under a new admin for several months, but the new admin had to leave for personal reasons. Jailbreak was released (and with that came a rapid increase in player count). It quickly became apparent that Jailbbreak needed two servers, not just one. Then, Tank took his first (and only) vacation. The Minecraft server continued to grow as the developer released new updates. And... for the first time, The Cube Server did more than break even, and actually began to turn a small profit.

Getting organized
As the Gmod community grew Tank decided to expand from two Jailbreak servers into 10 (and the players came to fill it). However, at times, the Gmod community can be a rough bunch (and we love them), so Tank developed a new model to govern ourselves, based on the business plan. This was called the "Core Values System." The staff and community were to abide by three core balues, Be Friendly, Cause No Grief, and Always Do What Is Best For The Community. Beneath these core values, Tank wrote the Administrative Outline, of which, an iteration still governs the game servers today.

Finding the vision
In the summer of 2013, one of the players of The Cube came to Tank about a relative with cancer. Tank was given a link to the Caring Bridge page for the relative, and his heart was moved. Tank's own son, the player Red_TankJr, was a cancer survivor. Tank took a portion of that month's server procees and donated it to the family of the cancer patient. That's when the vision became clear. We didn't just want to host game servers, we wanted to change lives. Tank took the idea to the senior staff about turning The Cube into a charity, and using the profits to provide computers to children with cancer. This proved to be no easy task, and the next 5 months were spent turning The Cube Server into a nonprofit.

Meeting Face to face
In December of 20133, Tank, AmmoniumNitrate, Nom³, Vampire and Hightechk met in Kansas City, along with several players who drove to the meeting. They signed the articles of incorporation, turning the sole proprietorship into a nonprofit corperation. The Cube Server became a charity, seeking to give computers to children with life threatening illnesses, scholarships to aspiring software engineers, and grants to indpendent developers that have great ideas, but lack the funds to make their games a reality.

Changes
In March and April, The Cube Server Inc. donated laptops to two different cancer patients, and began raising funds to provide laptops to several more. At this time, however, it became clear that some of the long-standing team members had a different vision, Oli being one of them. They chose to return to the for-profit sector, starting another game server (and online community). In May, they parted ways with The Cube. Howeverm though speculationflew about The Cube closing, The Cube remained h5 and continued pushing forward toward not only providing laptops to kids with cancer, but in providing them the much-needed social support that is needed to combat the psycholgiccal effects of chemotherapy. With that, the move was made from thecubeserver.com to thecubeserver.org, showing that we are not focused on being a company, but on providing a service to the world
Changes

Today

Changing lives, changing the world
Every step of the road we were met with brilliant, giving people who wanted to be a part of what was going on. Oli and Tank always had a vision to make a safe corner of the internet, where players were friendly and the community was warm and acceoting. This continues today, but with a much deeper ficision. Through our game server we enable children with life threatening illnesses to still have a window to the world, able to play and interact with other children from all over the world, even when confined to a bed or a hospital room. We aim to offer them the chance to have something vital; the chance to be a normal kid, in spite of their illness. Want to get involved? Join our forums or consider donating to our cause.
